We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.
The couple confront the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
